Ames Conservative Breakfast this Thursday

The next Ames Conservative Breakfast is this Thursday, April 3rd, 2014, at The Pizza Ranch, 1404 Boston Ave., Ames, Iowa, from 7:00 am to 8:15 am. We will be paying respect to the U.S. Navy with 2 great speakers.

The first speaker will be State Representative Tom Shaw from Laurens, Iowa. Tom graduated from Laurens-Marathon School in 1979 and then enlisted in the United States Navy and attained the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. After 20 years of service he retired in 2002. He participated in numerous operations including Operation Desert Shield. He received a number of awards including the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (3), Good Conduct Medal (5), National Defense Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.

After his retirement, Tom and his wife moved back to his hometown and using his two-year degree in Criminal Justice, he joined the Laurens Police Department, where he was appointed Chief of Police in 2006.

Tom was elected to District 10, in 2010 and in 2012, and will not seek reelection after this term ends.  He currently serves on the following committees:  Ethics ( Vice Chair), Public Safety (Vice Chair), Agriculture, Natural Resources and Veterans Affairs.

The second speaker will be Scott Schaben, candidate for U.S. Senate. Scott was born in Harlan, Iowa and attended Carroll Kuemper Catholic High School, graduating in 1993. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1993 and served until his honorable discharge in 1999 so he could attend college. He is a graduate of Iowa State University, earning his B.S. degree in Marketing in May of 2003. After graduation, Scott worked as a sales professional in his family business until 2006 when he started his career in the automotive industry. Quickly working his way up in the business, he has served as a Sales Manager for a dealership in Ames since March of 2009.

March Central Committee Meeting

The next meeting of the Story County Republican Central Committee will take place on Monday, March 17 at 7:00 PM at the Oakwood Road Community Center, located at 2400 Oakwood Road in Ames. We will be discussing the upcoming Freedom Run Charity Fundraiser, benefiting the Story County Freedom Flight, and we’ll have a recap of our County Convention, so please join us!!!

Ames, IA – Chairman Dane Nealson announced today that the Story County Republican Party is partnering with the Story County Freedom Flight in organizing a charity 5k featuring Senator Chuck Grassley. The event will take place on Saturday, April 5 at SCORE Pavilion in Nevada, IA. Included in the day’s events are a 5k race, a one-mile walk, and a children’s fun run. A pancake breakfast will immediately follow the race. All money raised will be directly contributed to the Story County Freedom Flight.


“This is a unique opportunity for our organization to host a nonpartisan event that raises money for an incredible cause,” said Chairman Nealson. “I am thankful to Senator Grassley for agreeing to join us, and am looking forward to a successful event which will raise funds to send these great American heroes to Washington D.C. on a trip they truly deserve.”


Story County Freedom Flight honors Story County veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam for their sacrifices by sending them to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials from their respective wars. The organization is in its third year of operation, and was awarded the Governor’s Volunteer Recognition Award by Governor Terry Branstad in 2013 for their efforts.


Chuck Grassley continues to be an active runner, despite his busy schedule. In September, Grassley celebrated his 80th birthday by running six miles, and he continues to run multiple 5k’s each year.

8:30 AM: 5k Road Race and 1-Mile Walk

*Pancake breakfast to immediately follow conclusion of 5k race at SCORE Pavilion. Breakfast will be free for race registrants and $10 for non-race registrants.



5k Road Race: $25 by Friday, March 21; $30 after March 21.

One Mile Walk: $20 by Friday, March 21; $25 after March 21.

Children’s Fun Run: $10 per child, no t-shirt included.

*T-shirt and goodie bag only guaranteed for those who sign up by March 21.

**Race day registrations will be accepted between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM.

Ames Conservative Breakfast Thursday!

Please join us this Thursday morning at 7 am for the Ames Area Conservative Breakfast! It will be at the Ames Pizza Ranch, located at 1400 Boston.

There will be two guest speakers:

We will welcome Danny Carroll, our newly elected Co-Chair of The Iowa Republican State Party.

Danny was elected as a county supervisor in Powershiek County in 1984 and served approximately 10 years.  He was then elected to the Iowa House Of Representatives in 1994 and served through 2006.  He currently serves as a family policy advocate Danny was elected as a county supervisor of Poweshiek County in 1984 and served approximately 10 years.  He was then elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 1994 and served through 2006.

He currently serves as a family policy advocate with The Family Leader.

Our other special guest speaker will be Stacie Herridge, who is a candidate for Story County Recorder.

Stacie grew up on a small farm near Cambridge, attended Nevada High School and received a BA in Management from the University of Northern Iowa. Stacie has worked for Story county for over 17 years, the first 14 years as Deputy in the County Recorder’s Office. In February of 2011, she transferred to the Deputy Auditor of Real Estate position after Lucy Martin was appointed Story County Auditor.

Stacie and her husband Nick live in Nevada and have three children.

Special City Election in Ames – Tuesday, March 4, 2014

A special city election for the Ames Convention Center project will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

Shall the City of Ames, in Story County, Iowa, issue its bonds in an amount not exceeding $19,000,000 for the purpose of paying one-half of the cost of constructing a multi-use convention facility located at the Iowa State University Center, to be jointly owned by the City and Iowa State University, and of renovating the Iowa State University Scheman Building
